F.A.Q.

Here are some common questions about Coolkiwi.

RUBBER PAINT

How do I prep my car before painting?
  • The main thing is to thoroughly wash your car with just water and soap before you start painting so that there is NO silicon or grease anywhere. Rubber paint will not stay on substances like silicon and grease so you need to make sure your car is very clean and then dried.
  • Do not go through prepaid car washes or similar as some of the waxes and chemicals in their products could stay on the car and either the paint wont stick on or it may react to the chemicals.
  • When painting a full car it is easier to mask the areas you don’t want painted (such as the windows etc). It isn’t essential as you can always remove the rubber paint on the areas you don’t want HOWEVER – when the paint is dry it is binded together so you dont want to try and rip it as it may cause it not to be loose around the edges you have pulled at. It is important to pull off the masking when the final layer of paint is still wet.
How much paint do I need?
  • For wheels we recommend one spray can per wheel. This will give a good thick layer to be durable and look good.
  • For a full car it really depends on the size and colour you want. For a very small car in just a flat black colour approx 8 litres, a medium size car approx 12 litres, a large car approx 16 litres. If you need any base coat (for chameleon or bright colours) or any top coats (special effects or different finishes) you may need more paint. If in doubt, just let us know what you want to do & we can guide you!
  • Having it a bit thicker is better than too thin, as when it comes to removing it, the thicker it is the easier it comes off. If it is too thin it can tear and become hard to take off.
How do I wash it?
  • Just plain water and car soap is fine. Use only a gentle cloth as you don’t want anything bristled to scratch it.
  • We have rubber paint cleaner and protection that we recommend to use – it prolongs the rubber paint keeping it looking nice and it is a good and easy way to clean and protect the paint.
  • Yes you can water blast your car when it is rubber painted.
  • Do not use prepaid car washes – wax and other chemicals that are fine for normal paint may react with rubber paint.
Will it cover my current original paint job if its damaged & bad condition?
  • Rubber paint is an excellent choice for a quick, easy and affordable way to cover an average paint job as we all know a full normal paint job costs thousands.
  • It depends how bad the damage is as to how much the rubber paint will cover:
  • If original paint is flecking/flicking/peeling off it would be recommended to have it sanded back and then rubber paint applied. If it is painted directly over the peeling paint it will not cover as well, have a smooth finish nor last as long.
  • If original paint has really deep scratches and marks they will still show through the rubber paint but it will be well disguised & still look all over better because it will be one solid colour/finish. Small scratches and wear and tear will be covered easily by rubber paint.
  • If original paint is just faded/small scratches etc rubber paint will do the job!
How long does it last? Is it Durable?
  • It all depends on how well it was applied and how well it is looked after. It will last about 3 years if it is looked after well and used as an everyday car. If it is garaged and only used perhaps as a weekend car it can last a lot longer. If it is a farm car that gets very muddy, a lot of sun, gets scratched then of course it wont last as long. It just depends on the use!
  • You need to keep any chemicals away from it, and if it is a really bright/fluro colour you should try and keep it out the sun when as much as possible – it can make the difference to keep it lasting for a lot longer.
  • Rubber paint is quite durable. If it is prepped well and sprayed thick enough, it wont scratch easily, it is a flexible kind of paint so doesn’t fleck off easily or get damaged easily either.
  • We have a new top-coat product arriving (2017) that will be petrolium resistant and will easily allow the paint to last 5 years.
How do I remove rubber paint?
  • If the rubber paint was prepped well & sprayed thick enough, you should be able to peel it off like a sheet by picking at a corner and pulling it slowly.
  • It will not pull of your original paint.
  • Sometimes if it is sprayed too thin it can break as your pulling and become quite a tedious job. Thats why we have…..:
  • Rubber Paint CITRUS DISSOLVER: It is a product made from 100% natural products so that it can remove the rubber paint without damaging your original paint. It simply needs to be sprayed on, left for a minute and then wiped off with a magnet fibre cloth (works best).
  • Please NEVER try to remove rubber paint with ANY other chemicals as we can’t guarantee if they will react with the paint and could cause potential damage to your original paint!
  • Coolkiwi citrus dissolver is the only recommended removal-product, but remeber you can always contact us if you need any help.
Can I sign write my car with rubber paint on it?
  • Yes – we have had customers place sign writing stickers over the rubber paint with no problem, only thing to keep in mind is that when it is pulled off it can potentially pull the rubber paint off with it.
  • We have also had customers have sign writing stickers on the original paint, then rubber paint sprayed over the top and the sticker outlines can still show through – its a cool subtle way to have sign writing like its almost in the paint.
  • If we are painting your car for you, we can also organise signwiting at further cost – please inquire.
Can I use rubber paint on my boat?
  • YES! We or our customers have used it on cars, motorbikes, boats, jet skis, motorcross bikes, bicycles, furnitures, glass etc! Its been tested in salt water so it is fine to use – Rubber paint can be used on almost anything with a flat surface.
DIY: Im thinking if doing it myself, what do I need to have & know?
  • We are all about the good old kiwi way of giving it a go yourself! Although there is skill involved to get a really good finish you dont need to be a professional painter to get a good result. Rubber Paint is really different to normal paint so anyone can learn. Plus – it can removed! So if you find your not made out for DIY after all at least it can be removed.
  • Its one of those things where the more you experiment with it the better results you will get. We have a lot of first-time painting customers get really cool results!
  • We have our “DIY Starter Packages” available for you – This is what you need. It includes the rubber paint with your chosen colour and quantity and also the spray gun. We would also reccommend to purchase a “Prep Kit” to make your job easier – cleaning beforehand and masking up what you dont want to paint.
  • Take note of WHERE you are planning on painting: do you live where its freezing? You may want to consider painting in a garage with heaters on or even purchase a cheap heat gun from your local DIY store. Do you live where its super hot and humid? You may want to consider waiting until the evening/night to paint when its cooled down. We have had customers paint in workshops, home garages, in their driveways, in carparks – you name it. When theres a will; theres a way.
  • Send us an enquiry email! We can have our rubber paint serviceman ring you and fully guide you through the steps of painting to help you acheive what you want!

Will 1 recharge can/kit be enough for my car?
  • Most cars take about 400g of refrigerant. Our recharge can is 600g so there should be enough there to top up your car.
  • Some cars (such as Holdens) take 600-800g. So one can may just be enough or you might need an extra can.
  • It should say on your system how much refrigerant gas your car takes.
Do you sell R12 gas, adaptors or conversion kits?

NO – R12 is now actually illegal to import into New Zealand so we cannot source this. We do not sell conversion kits or adaptors because we dont want to risk any customers mixing gases by accident.

Your best option is to take to your local professional and have your system fully vacuumed and converted.

I recharged my system but its still not working/showing low.

You most likely have a leak. Dont recharge your system anymore as it will be a waste. You will need to use our leak detector or leak sealer kit first to find or seal any leaks or have it looked at by a professional if your system is damaged.

Do I need any oil/system lubricant?

Our Recharge cans come with oil in them that all systems need to keep them lubricated and keep them from cracking.

If you have an old AC system it is good to start with a can of our “Oil System Safe Leak Sealer” to give the AC system a good amount of lubrication and then top the system up with the recharge can.
